While you always want to keep your child safe, it’s important to remember that things will happen that are out of your control. This is why it’s very important that you teach your child how to prepare for an emergency in case something was to happen.
It’s very important that you teach your child about calling 911. Make sure you tell your child that if you or a family member were to ever become seriously hurt, or if they ever noticed someone trying to break into their home, they need to call 911. Teach them about how the police officers will come and protect them or help them when they call 911. Show your child how to use the phone, whether a house phone, cell phone or both. You may even want to put “911” on a piece of paper near the phone to help your child remember.
You should also remind your child that calling 911 is only important for emergencies and that calling the police for non emergency reasons is not acceptable.
Natural disasters occur in every part of the world, and it’s important that you talk with your child about what to do and where to go in case a natural disaster happens. For example, if your area is prone to hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes, make sure you teach your child what to do if the situation ever occurs. Tell them what area of the house they should try to get to or what they can do to keep themselves safe. If you have an emergency kit somewhere, make sure your child knows where it is.
You should also teach your child what to do in case of a fire. For example, if a fire occurred in your home while your child was sleeping, you need to teach them how to check the door to see if they can exit through the hallway. If they can’t, you need to make sure that your child knows another way to escape your home, such as using a fire emergency ladder in their room to escape through a window.
Make sure that you do drills in your home to help your child practice. For example, have earthquake, tornado or fire drills at your home every now and then to help your children learn what to do if the situation were to occur.
It’s always a good idea to teach your child how to take care of injuries in case they cannot find help. Check with your local community center and see if they offer a First Aid or Safety Class for your child to take. Many community centers offer basic first aid training classes or CPR to help teach children how to be prepared for emergency situations, and this may be a good idea to give your child the necessary skills they will need.
It’s always a good idea to prepare your child for emergencies. Even if they never have to use this knowledge or skills, at least you’ll know they’ll be prepared in case they ever find themselves in these situations.
