Summary: Are your kids frightened of meeting new people? Here are some tips that can help them overcome that fear.
Children tend to become comfortable with their routine, and this includes being comfortable with the people they see most. Most children will experience a small (or large) fear of people, especially those they don’t know. And while it’s good for your child to be weary of strangers, you don’t want your child to be afraid of everyone they come into contact with, especially teachers or other children.
Luckily, the fear of people is not something that most children will have forever, and if you use the following tips, you can help your child be more outgoing and more willing to meet new people.
If you can introduce your child to strangers at a younger age, you will make them more open to making friends and accepting new people into their life. Make sure that you take your child out in public with you, such as to the grocery store or even to the park. Bring them anywhere where they will interact with others, and they’ll start to realize that strangers are a part of their everyday routine.
Lead by example.
Make sure that you’re always being friendly to those people around you that you don’t know. For example, make sure that your child sees you interacting with the person at the checkout counter of the store, the librarian or anyone else. Children tend to mimic what their parents do, and if you’re extroverted, your child will be more open to doing the same.
Set up play dates.
If you have friends with young children (or if you meet someone at a park or play group) invite them over for a play date. Make sure that you set up regular play dates with a variety of individuals and not just the same person, as the variety will help your child to learn that new people are okay. If you constantly hold play dates with the same person, then your child will become comfortable with that one person, and it will not help them get over their fear of people.
Talk to them.
Use the power of communication to help your child get over their fear. Talk to them about what makes them so afraid of others and tell them why they shouldn’t always be afraid. Let them know that meeting people they don’t know is how they make friends, and that most people they meet will be nice and beneficial to their lives, such as their teachers, librarians and play group counselors.
While you want your child to be open to new people so that they can make new friends and have a pleasant experience while in school, play groups or other activities, it’s also important to warn your child about the dangers of strangers. Unfortunately, not every person in this world is nice, so make sure that you tell your child that they should never leave an area with someone other than you, no matter what the other person may say. You should also let them know that if they ever feel scared and cannot find you, they should look for a person of authority, such as a police officer or teacher.
