Summary: Information regarding the importance of overseas students taking IELTS to study in UK higher education institutions and gain employment
IELTS are currently the only major English language test that gives candidates a face to face language assessment, but as with most things, this may soon change and become competitive; exam boards etc may eventually offer their own IELT type examination.
IELTS are an important type of test in terms of emigration and education purposes and is seen as the most important language test due to those reasons; last year, there were 1.7 million people that took the IELT test.
IELTS are required to be taken by students from overseas that wish to study in the UK, US or Australia. The idea behind IELTS is for students to demonstrate their understanding of the English language and at what level they can communicate at.
The majority of universities and HE institutions within the UK accept IELTS as proof of proficiency and understanding regarding the English Language. The IELTS test provides universities with a clear indication on overseas student’s ability to read write and speak English; leading experts in English Language have designed and developed the IELTS test especially for this purpose.
Overseas students that do not take the IELT may not receive a placement offer within a university that look for higher scoring candidates that take the test. However, there is no minimum score requirement for overseas students to be accepted into a university within an English-speaking country - the scores from the IELT tests are just an indication. Also there is a 0 score for those who do not attempt the test but are looking to study in the UK.
Higher Education Institutions are advised not to accept a score from an IELT test report that is older than two years due to validity issues.
Different courses in several universities across the world do require a certain level of English Language proficiency; the University of Edinburgh requires students to have obtained an English Proficiency score of 7.0 out of 10.0 in the IELT test for numerous subject areas including, Business, Management, Finance, Law, English Literature and Celtic/Scottish Studies. In Italy, a score of 4.5 is required by the majority of universities in order to be accepted to study there as an undergraduate. Once graduated, a score of 6.5 is needed to study at master’s level.
People from countries across the world are scored for their English proficiency and each year nations are given an average score. Amazingly Malaysia and Romania are joint top, with France and Germany closely following in joint third. Brazil, Kenya and the Philippines were next and surprisingly, countries such as Italy and Spain were below 10th place.
There are variations across countries and even the countries that do not speak English as their first language require certain levels of English, which is a little bizarre.
There are other English proficiency tests that students can take, however, they are not as well known by universities across the world and therefore, could be a mistake.
