Whether you’re hosting a large gathering or an intimate dinner party, show guests how much you care about them by putting some real thought into your table settings. Here are some tips on turning a table into a fitting backdrop for your occasion…
Add a splash of colour into your gathering to really make an impact. Decide on a colour palette for your table setting, looking to the seasons for inspiration. Choose fresh vibrant colours for a summer garden party to create an inviting tablescape and earth or jewel tones for the cooler months to feel warm and inviting. For a more textural setting, start with a patterned table cloth, being sure to co-ordinate any colour with the print. If you opt for a vibrant assortment of colours, as with the table linen on this picture, tone down other details and let a few bold colours steal the show (along with your fabulous party food of course!). Remember, the table linen is probably the most standout feature of any setting so ensure it is pristine, and remember to freshly iron it the night before or morning of your gathering. Mix citronella candles with other colourful tealights to ward away the bugs and create a cosy ambience if you‘re still at the table at nightfall.
Setting a table should be an expression of your personal style, so impress your dinner guests and get artistic! Start with a design theme then follow it through with all the elements including napkins, centrepieces and tablecloths. Turn a humble napkin into something visually interesting by following a beach/ocean theme as pictured here. Team DIY rope napkin rings with vintage dishes. Seashells can function as flower vases, decorative centrepieces and/or place setting embellishments. For a tea party table, a tiered cake stand full of cupcakes frosted in multi-colours will make a deliciously beautiful centrepiece, laid out with mismatched china and simple flower posies picked from the garden. The medley of colour will be really effective and this look is achievable with ‘oh-I-just-threw-this-together’ appeal.
Cut flowers are perhaps the most common decoration for the dinner table. Freshly cut blooms always look effective, especially when colour-matched with table linen or other additions. Bring a touch of spring to your table with fragrant seasonal blooms, colour matched to your place settings and other table accessories as seen here. Mix vivid flowers and patterns to set an exotic scene. Or choose pastel roses against crystal goblets, white linen and green tapered candles, for an elegant feel. Remember that centrepieces or accessories to the table should be attention-grabbing but unobtrusive, so leave enough room for serving dishes and other dinnerware.
It’s the attention to detail that can really impress. Are you arranging your guests’ seating or letting them sit where they like? Carefully consider place setting embellishments to personalise spaces on your table. Place cardsare not only a memento of the day/evening; they also serve a great practical purpose, so that everyone can find their seat with minimum fuss! These butterfly place cards which rest on the rim of a glass add an elegant touch, ideal for dinner parties and weddings.
Place settings offer up an opportunity to add elements to your table that are light-hearted and quirky. These vintage chalkboard place settings are a fun alternative to place cards and will look really effective on the table. They are versatile, so you’re not just restricted to using them for the names of your guest, and you can use them time and time again. For a casual, stylish and fun look, follow a refreshing golden yellow theme using lemons as ‘place cards’, simply cutting a horizontal slit in the top and popping in a place card. You can do the same with artichokes on a green theme, placing a handwritten card within the spikes and placing in white china bowls for colour contrast.
