If you want to have yourself a good cheap holiday abroad, then the best thing to do is stay away from all of the tourist traps where prices are a lot more expensive. You can have a truly memorable holiday by exploring the country from a different perspective, and one of the best ways to do this is rent a house or an apartment in a residential area for the duration of your holiday. This can be very cost effective especially if there are a couple of you that can share the rent and the bills. You will get to experience the true life of a local, using the same local shops and transport as well as the same entertainment facilities. You may not have a pool, but if you stay somewhere which is close enough to the coast, you will still be able to swim and sunbathe.
The language is one of the biggest barriers for all of us and it seems so much easier just to speak English as so many people seem to speak the language. As English speakers, we seem to of become lazy in learning other languages, and if you do take the time to learn a new language, it can open up a whole different side to the country you are visiting. You can buy phrases books everywhere in all sorts of languages, so there really is no excuse for us not making the effort. You will usually find that if you make the effort to communicate in the local language, then the people will open up and be very warm and hospitable. You will have the confidence to tread the less walked path, away from where all of the tourists go and submerge yourself in the local culture. Taking in the places where the locals go to eat, drink and relax, you will see a different side to the country than you would normally see staying in your 4 star hotels.
The food can tell you a lot about the local people and you will get some exceptional food when you look for it. On your next cheap holiday abroad, where ever you decide to go, go for a wander around and find a café or restaurant that is full of local people. This is the best way to get to know the food that the local people like to eat from day to day. In Asia you might find a nice noodle stall on the street, in Europe a café along the sea front, it all depends on where you are, and you can get some excellent recommendations if you do some research before you go away. There is plenty of travel advice is all of the various guide books that are out there and you can also get a lot of information online. Whether you are looking for authentic Red Curry in Thailand, or an authentic Spanish Paella, there is a wealth of information on the internet to advise you on the local food before you get there. In some places when you go away, going through all of the local delicacies on offer is almost an adventure in itself.
The biggest thing you need to do is get over the fear of being out of your comfort zone. Prepare yourself before you go away and try and learn some of the language, this will come in very handy when you get there and can make things a lot easier, depending on your proficiency. Do not be afraid to go out and get lost amongst the back street cafes and restaurants that you may find as these can often be where some of the best spots are. Anywhere you see a lot of locals in, eating and drinking, may be a good place to try for some authentic local fare. With technology now days you can have a map and also a translator on your Smartphone or iPad, so you never need to get lost or be unable to communicate. Just think what people did before the advent of technology? Getting out and mixing with the locals will make sure you bring back a lot of wonderful memories from your trip and you might just make some great friends as well!
