Short Summary: Arimbra hills in the district of Malappuram, Kerala is also known as 'Mini Ooty' because of its height from sea level.
"Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky."
These ever time favourite lines suddenly came to my lips, when I stood rooted to the spot. The clouds passed by almost touching my head, bestowing their blessings on me. Serene breeze made the ambience even more tranquil. No place in the world is short of a paradise, if it lulls you to a sweet slumber through its soothing melodies.
I was at the awe-inspiring ‘Mini Ooty’. Arimbra hills in the district of Malappuram, Kerala is also known as “Mini Ooty’ because of its height from sea level. It stands at a height of 1000 feets above sea level.
Ooty is one of the famous hill stations in India, situated in the state of Tamil Nadu. Arimbra Hills, in many ways, resembles the place of Ooty, and hence resulted in its popular name of “Mini Ooty”.
Ooty is a much known destination. Anybody wants an escapade to a place, with the same charm and chillness of Ooty, but without its crowded tourists? Arimbra Hills can be that destination.
For me, the journey to the hills was a soul-stirring experience. Far from the madding crowd, I had one of the best days of my life, listening to the august sounds of the surroundings there and getting myself healed by the Mother Nature.
Travelling 9 kms from Malappuram towards Kozhikode, we reached a place called Aravankara. From there, the actual twisty, topsy-turvy route to the hills starts. The hills lay down beneath the cloudy horizon, overlooking the vast expanse of greenery all around.
There is also a small beautiful lake nearby. The hills are a much sought after locations by photographers.
The place has its share of attractions but do not expect a shopping mall or restaurant nearby. Since it is a remote area from the proper town of Malappuram, you can find decent food courts but not the proper urban types. It is better to carry food stuff of your own. Also remember to carry a small electronic torch if you have plans to stay long till dark.
Arimbra Hills can also be taken as a spot of unplanned weekend vacation. Well, I was there on an unplanned holiday. Since you don’t need to do much preparation, this can be an easy getaway destination.
If you can spare more of your time, you can stay in some nearby resort or hotel, and can explore the district of Malappuram. I always suggest Arimbra as one of the best destinations, especially if you are on a strict or minimal budget.
Calicut airport is the nearest airport to Arimbra-Mongam road. Kochi airport and Coimbatore airport also falls nearby. The nearby cities are Melmuri, Manjeri and Myladi. If you have to travel by raod after reaching Malappuram, take this route, from Kondotty road to Mini Ooty. The distance is approximately 9000 kms.
