Things to do in Kochi PrefectureKochi is a city on the west coast of India that has been ruled by many foreign nations, including the Portuguese from 1503 through 1663, and the Dutch from 1663 through 1773. With the Anglo-Dutch Treaty in 1814, Kochi was handed over to the British who modernized the city's government and improved the harbor for the increasing shipping industry. In 1947, India won its independence from the British and from this point through 1967, Kochi incorporated several small states, villages and islands.

Modern Kochi has the second busiest port in India and is home to more than 2 million people. Known as the "Queen of Arabian Sea," Kochi has a rich, cultural history seen in the architecture, the cuisine and the historical sites. Kochi has been placed in the top three tourist destinations by the World Travel and Tourism Council.

Paradesi Synagogue, located in Jew Town, is the oldest operating synagogue in the world. Originally built in the mid 1500s, it was destroyed by the Portuguese and rebuilt again under Dutch rule. Paradesi Synagogue has opulent decor, with hand-painted tile floors, glittering chandeliers, hand-knotted oriental rugs and several antiquities on display, such as gold crowns and the Scrolls of Law.

The top-rated Kerala Folklore Theatre and Museum houses a large collection of artifacts and exhibits, which help explain the history of the region. The theatre has daily performances of ritual art, such as Poothanum and Thira, a ritual dance used twice a year to ward off evil spirits. They also have a performance of Kalaripayattu, the martial art form of Kerala, which dates back more than 3,000 years.
One of the most picturesque beaches in the region is Cherai Beach, located on the northern end of Vypeen Island. It is an extremely popular area and accessible year-round. The area behind the beach features lush, green paddy fields and coconut groves.
The water is a crisp blue-green and extremely clean. Cherai Beach is the perfect place to watch the sun rise or set. Located approximately 25 km from the city, taxis or a pre-booked car hire is recommended to get to this location.

The most popular yearly festival is the Cochin Carnival, which is held on the last week of the year in celebration of the New Year. One can expect to see live music, fairs, games and a grand fireworks display at midnight on December 31. The Cochin Carnival concludes with a massive parade through the streets of Fort Kochi on New Year's Day.
