How to Relax the Body and Mind
In western culture we spend a lot of time in our heads and are constantly thinking and absorbing information. When we are at work we are thinking about being at home and vice versa. However this will only stress us out as we’re not able to control what happens when we’re not there. Thinking in the present will stop you from being annoyed about past situations and anxious about future events. We don’t always need to control everything and make sure everything goes our way. Allow yourself to have a “let it be” approach now and again and relax.

Meditation is a welcome relief from a busy lifestyle and allows you to de-stress and simplify your thoughts. You don’t have to sit on your legs and hum to mediate; you can simply try some of these techniques even at your desk:

Begin meditation by interrupting your normal daily thoughts and concentrate on your breathing. Take a few deep breaths and exhale slowly. Get a full ribcage of air and get some good fresh air into your lungs. Slowly move your head to the left, leaning your left ear onto your left shoulder. Move your head to the right and lean your ear against your right shoulder. Next roll your shoulders in a circular motion forwards and backwards.

Exercise is a great way of working your body and relaxing your mind by releasing good endorphins that can enhance your mood. Exercise for 30 minutes a day to make you feel good and reduce stress levels. Intense activities can increase the levels of the stress hormone cortisol, so gentler activities such as walking or swimming will have a calmer effect.

Laughter is a free and fun way of reducing stress, as it activates your body's stress response, and then cools it down leaving you feeling calm, relaxed and full of feel good hormones. It can help improve the immune system and reduce the feeling of pain. Make time to see friends and those you can have a good giggle with. Watch a comedian on a dvd or look at some photos. Surround yourself with fun and positive people and get rid of those people who leave you feeling drained.

Relax the Body and MindGive yourself a detox as this will cleanse your body and mind. Avoid stimulants such as caffeine laden drinks and sugary foods as these can make you jittery. Try calming herbal teas and water to maintain your body’s natural water balance and stay hydrated.

There are range of spa treatments that are proven to relax as well as cleanse the mind. Indian head massage focuses on the head and shoulders to remove tension. Indian head massage stimulates blood circulation and oxygen to the scalp, which improves concentration as well as alertness. It gets rid of eye strain and helps to improve memory capabilities.

A Swedish massage is an all over massage which uses a range of pressure asserting movements over the body such as kneading and stroking. It helps to remove tension and knots in the body and is great for deep relaxation.
