Tips To Keep You Safe This 4th Of July

Tips To Keep You Safe This 4th Of July
Short Summary: Help your family and friends stay safe this Independence Day by following the tips of this helpful guide

Independence Day conjures visions of good, old-fashioned American fun. There will be picnics with friends and family. There will be swimming, boating and general fun in the sun. And finally, when everyone is satiated with fun and food, there will be magnificent fireworks displays.

No one wants to put a damper on this, the most American of holidays. But a nod to safety now can prevent the party from turning uncomfortable, or even tragic, later.

Food Safety When Picnicking

Food safety is paramount. In fact, the Department of Agriculture predicts that 128,000 people will be hospitalized with a food-borne illness during 2013. Keep food poisoning away from your Fourth of July picnic by following these guidelines:
  • Return both raw and cooked foods to the cooler within an hour.
  • Wash hands, serving plates, eating utensils and cooking surfaces.
  • Separate raw meats from other foods. Never store them together, and never use the same utensils. Marinades that are used to flavor raw meat should be discarded.
  • Use a thermometer and cook food to the recommended temperature.
In addition to food safety, picnic areas are notorious for bees, wasps and yellow jackets. Therefore, choose a location far from enticing trash bins full of sugary soda cans and promptly clean any sweet spills.

Keeping an emergency anaphylaxis kit handy in case of bee allergies is smart.

Boating, Swimming and Water Sports

  • Never drink alcohol and participate in water sports. The Coast Guard warns that about 33 percent of recreational boating accidents involve alcohol. And up to 70 percent of water sports-related fatalities can be attributed to alcohol.
  • Always wear life jackets when boating. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 88 percent of 2010’s boating deaths involved people who were not wearing life jackets.
  • Always supervise children. The CDC identifies children under four as the demographic group at the highest risk for drowning. Furthermore, most of these tragedies occur in home swimming pools, not lakes or oceans.
  • Everyone, regardless of age, should always swim with a buddy.
  • At the beach, make sure everyone knows how to cope with a rip tide.

Fun in the Sun

You Safe This 4th Of JulyWear sunscreen with at least a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15. Apply thick layers and reapply after swimming or sweating. Sunburn is painful and can cause skin cancer.

Extreme sunburn can become polymorphous light eruption, or sun poisoning. In extreme cases, sun-poisoning can lead to dehydration and shock. Other symptoms include fever, nausea and a blistering rash.

In addition to sunburn, heat puts people at risk for heat exhaustion. When left untreated, heat exhaustion can become heat stroke, a condition in which the body temperature rises quickly, and the body becomes unable to cool itself. To prevent heat exhaustion, consciously stay hydrated with non-alcoholic beverages throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.

Putting on a Light Show with Fireworks

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to view a professional display. However, to many people, a family fireworks show is a tradition. If so, follow these safety tips:
  • Obey local fireworks laws.
  • Keep water nearby.
  • Designate someone to supervise the show. Children should never ignite fireworks.
  • Never reignite a “dud.” Instead, wait 20 minutes and extinguish it in a bucket of water.
  • Never ignite fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Paying attention to basic summer safety will ensure that your Fourth of July celebration makes great memories that last a lifetime.
